If you like recipes for chicken, then you have to try Cary Grant-Inspired Barbecue Chicken Casserole. The famous actor himself had a hand in developing this recipe as he was a secret cook! While the original recipe has been adapted, Cary Grant inspired this tasty recipe for chicken.

This easy chicken casserole features a flavorful sauce that achieves a perfect balance between sweet and savory. For perfectly moist chicken, it is important to brown the chicken first before baking it. This method gives the chicken a richer texture because it has been browned with salt and pepper.

A varied blend of seasonings such as Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and ground cumin add heat to the ketchup-based sauce. Molasses and brown sugar boost the sweetness while also controlling the heat of the other ingredients. The sauce is so delicious that you have to taste it to believe it. Once the chicken has finished baking, enjoy a piece with some potato salad or even a side salad.

Preparation Time30 min

Cooking Time1 hr 15 min

Ingredients

  • 1 4 1/2 pound chicken, cut into 8-10 pieces
  • salt and pepper
  • Olive oil or vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

  2. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper then fry the chicken pieces in the oil in batches until browned.

  3. Place the cooked chicken in the baking dish.

  4. In a saucepan mix together the ketchup, Worcestershire, brown sugar, Tabasco, molasses, seasonings, water, vinegar, onion and garlic. Whisk together and heat until mixture starts to bubble and is thick.

  5. Pour the sauce over the chicken, covering each piece.

  6. Cover with foil and bake for 60 to 75 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked.
