The History of Ranch Dressing

For many years, ranch dressing has been the most popular salad dressing flavor in the United States. Ranch dressing is celebrated for its tangy flavor and versatility, both of which make it great for use as a dressing, dip, spread, marinade, and more. Ranch dressing mix can also be used in a wide variety of applications, such as this easy casserole recipe for Cheesy Bacon Ranch Potatoes. Many people enjoy ranch dressing every day, but they may not know the humble beginnings of this American treasure.

In 1954, Steve and Gayle Henson opened Hidden Valley Ranch, a dude ranch located near Santa Barbara, CA. At the ranch, they served their guests a rich and flavorful dressing made from mayonnaise, buttermilk, garlic, onion, and herbs. The dressing grew so popular that the Hensons began selling the dressing and dressing seasoning mix so that guests could enjoy their own "ranch" dressing at home. The Hensons' brand, Hidden Valley Ranch, was bought by the Clorox Company in the early 1970s.
